I have finnish version, but I try to translate... Go to "layer" --> "transparency" --> "color to alpha". There you need to select a colour you want to be transparent. Hope that helped. :D

It's quite simple really... what u guys want to do is "render" the image... to do this u just have to use the pen tool (not sure what it's called in GIMP, but that's it's name in PS), once u cut it out, u just have to paste it in a transparent layer (a new one) and then save it as a PNG, this way you'll get a transparent BG.

Ehh, yes, but itīs stupid and slow if the background is solid color, like white. Then you can do it as I said in GIMP, it doesnīt work correctly with multi-colored images though, but for example if you want to cut out text from solid colored background, there it works. Atleast those are my experiences... Or use the magic wand with appropriate tolerance. Cutting out is pretty much last chance, but necessary if the background isnīt solid color.

Hmm, then you probably need to cut it out manually, or something...
