In an attempt to recreate the visual play from the popular manga and anime series, this game doesn't deliver too much quality overall. The graphics, sounds, and some special abilities are the best qualities in this game, with several limitations in it. Unlike the second game, you do not receive health orbs to assist you on missions and stronger enemies, and the ending scene cuts out way too quickly in order for the players to collect all virtue orbs in time. Thus, the player needs to buy a skill chip that absorbs orbs in order to collect them all quickly. Also, the only way to get items from the general store is to exchange items, not buy them, and you can run out of items (and health) quickly. An unfornuate flaw that thankfully is taken out in the second game where there are better items that you can actually buy and it is easier to gain money. There is no free rome in this game so players must go off of places on the map (in the second also), which isn't bad, but the constant battles can become tedious at times. (Imagine playing pokemon and having to wander through endless grass. You don't always get enemies, but becomes tedious when you can't afford to have them.) However, the graphics make the cut and fight scenes very interactive, although my only issue with this is to be able to skip cutscenes like you can in the second game. And, although you can buy bigger skill plates which can become full quickly, they do allow room for improvement in Naruto, making enemies easier to defeat as you go along. There are other popular Naruto characters to play as, but unfortunately they can only be used for certain amounts of time because their assistance is based soley on their chakra level, which diminshes quickly, but they have no health to lose should they be hit, so this is like a double edge sword.
Overall, this isn't a difficult game to beat, and most of the missions are do-able, but failing some you may not be able to do over, but as I mentioned above, it can seem like a waste of time with limitations that can make it frusterating to play at times, especially with items. However, Naruto fans can still find some fun in playing this game with a few of their favourite characters and even battling familiar villans (such as Kabuto and Orochimaru).
It isn't a bad start to the franchise, but if players are looking for more flexibility and advantages, I would suggest buying Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles 2. It's a much better buy and naruto can release a lot more clones in the second, as opposed to the first with only 3, (four if you buy the special skill chip). And the second one has a vs screen for 2 players, and a lot more unlockable characters and missions to choose from to play with in missions, such as Sasuke Uchiha and Gaara. (The only annoying thing about the second is you deal with A LOT of puppets that can take awhile to beat). Long review, but others may argue differently but that's my outake on this game so far. Either than that, it is a fun game to play if you overlook the differences in the future advanced games.
