With Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat ready to reboot the series for the umpteenth time, bloodthirsty as ever, we’ve been hard at work discussing a few favorite fatalities we’d like to see replicated in glorious next gen-o-vision. Join us as we, well, Finish Him…

1) Step To It
It’s a simple matter indeed to pinpoint the precise moment macabre and tongue-in-cheek swapped priority in the world of Mortal Kombat. Naturally, Jax and his infamous boot stamp fatality marked this turning point. Growing via a comic sprite zoom, he simply stamps his opponent into the earth – an effect that would look excellent in 3D, and not nearly as contrived.

2) Crushing Defeat
Mortal Kombat: Deception was somewhat of a watershed moment in arena deaths, featuring the usual array of acid and meat grinders. Hell’s Foundry, though, oozed class by comparison. Launching foes directly into the machinery itself, they’d cook for a few seconds before being slammed into mush. We’re mentally stable, us…

3) My Adoring Fans
We can distinctly remember some wonderkid or other performing this fatality on GamesMaster way back when, only to be terrified by the sight of a practically cuboid decapitated head. Taking their opponent by an arm and a leg, fighters swing them into the blades of a rotating fan. And not an office one, either…

4) I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire
When Smoke wants a bout over, he certainly means it. Taking the phrase ‘self-destruct’ to its widest possible extreme, the mechanoid releases dozens of bombs in Mortal Kombat 3, destroying not just his opponent, but the entire earth.

5) Time Team
Gory and basic though it is, we’d love to see Sub-Zero’s freeze rip fatality, again from MK3 – just to test the studio’s mettle so far as realism versus comedy is conserned. If we see five skulls in the resulting mess, things are going to get silly, quickly…
