Ordinarily, beat-'em-up crossovers elicit rage from both sides of the fan base – particularly when you're talking about bringing characters as disparate as those from the Mortal Kombat series and DC comics together under one roof. However, we think we've got a ceasefire in our sights this time around. Settling down with a controller and full character roster for
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, any qualms about this being a risky venture for Chicago-based developer Midway quickly dissipated. But how far has it come since our
US comrades took a lookat a small portion of the DC storyline?
Very far, it would seem. The game's roster of DC characters is impressive and while all DC characters are very much in their classic comic guise - with Batman in his grey suit and Catwoman in purple – it's the pre-Heath Ledger Joker that steals the show with his spring-loaded boxing glove, hand buzzer and wonderfully sadistic, controversial Fatality.
MK community forums have been aflutter with worries over the new Fatality and Brutality moves – specifically, just how far DC would permit Midway to push the violence where its characters were concerned. Take it from us though, Midway hasn't let the gore go just yet and – despite trims for the T-rated US game - the Joker's bullet-in-the-face Fatality is all present and correct in the final European build.
That said, comic book fans might be wondering just how Midway can justify the inclusion of character that, strictly speaking, has no superpowers or Batman-ésque special abilities. Hans Lo, the game's executive producer, elaborates: "Traditionally, he's not a fighter, by any means. The question was: how do we bring the Joker into this, in a way that's believable? Again, it goes back to our Story Mode. For example, with Superman, magic is his weakness. But, at the same time, magic strengthens other people - and that's what happens to the Joker. He finds out that he has these powers and strength he never knew he had before. He's fairly unstable, so he revels in it. When you see him fight, he's got the comedy moves, but he still kicks butt."
