What happened to Fujin between 4 and Deadly Alliance?

Raiden says at the beginning of Deadly Alliance he had to relinquish his status as an Elder God. If he was an Elder God that means his ending in 4 was canon, he chose Fujin to be the new protector. Why did he need to relinquish his status? Fujin should have been there as protector.

The reason is simple.
Fujin wasn't popular enough back then and the fans were begging to bring Raiden back.

well as much as i LOVE Raiden!(he is my MK hero) id still like to fujin more! we have never seen much of him. its time they give him some spotlight

I wouldn't mind in the slightest having Fujin return. I don't really remember what he was like in Armageddon. But I still have MK4 on my Computer and I still enjoy playing as him.
