I had already seen gameplay footage of mk9 and saw a full walk through of mk's story mode with it's most epic story so far and whatnot. But I hadn't gotten to actually playing mk9 till a few days ago.
After I got my first ps3 I didn't even give it a second thought, MK9 was the first thing I bought, I was expecting great stuff, I saw great stuff from mk9 on youtube, but actually playing it exceeded all my expectations, I mean how do I say this....? The unique normal moveset of each character, great classic special moves along with equally great new ones. The enhanced moves too, I always wanted to see liu kang do a flame flying kick, or scorpion throwing both spears, almost everyone's enhanced version of the move is worth the bar tactically and visually. Everyone has his/her own unique way of combo breaker, but here's the best part, the x-rays, and not just the flashiness of the x-ray moves itself. But the type of move each character has to perform the x-ray, different strategy for everyone(like scorpion's is a quick teleport hit, jax's is an extended unblockable grab I think, and Johney Cage's is a hit-counter), I mean I already knew this from the gameplay footage, but actually playing the game made it mean a lot lot more than I thought it would. Some X-rays also refrenced moves that weren't outright added as special moves/fatalities, for example sonya's upwards bycickle kick special move, or liu kang's wheel kick uppercut fatality. Best of all however, is the fighting engine itself, at first I thought mk4 had the best fighting engine, mk2 and umk3 were also great engines when you got around knowing how to play them, MKD was slugish but looked great with each character having different movesets, MKSM was awesomely fast and had great combos and whatnot. Mk9....took all the that and nearly perfected it, if not outright perfected it. I just don't know how much to explain it, even when fighting/getting beat-up by Shao Kahn I never found myself questioning anything in mk9's fighting engine. I can't explain anymore to people who haven't played the game it. Sorry if I sounded annoying, I just....mk9's awesomeness overwhelmed me so much that I just had to take out my feelings here.

I think most people here will understand what you felt, Netherrealm really amped up the quality with MK9. The kombo mechanic is so smooth you can actually pull off decent kombos by experimenting. Since Warner acquired Midway, we've had quality projects from Netherrealm (though one could argue on MK vs DCU but I think every complain were mostly from whiny fanboys).
I nearly bought the Komplete Edition yesterday but since I already finished the game, I'd be buying it mostly for the DLC characters. Still, if I ever find it at a good price .... :O |

Just finished story mode, many seem to complain about the difficulty of shao kahn, I guess that's because they greatly underestimate the usefulness of raiden's teleport.
No really, for even better usage of it, be far from kahn, and when he throws a spear/hammer at you, teleport. There's a free combo opportunity/X-ray opportunity for you, apply the punishment to kahn. Retreat and then wait for another hammer/arrow throw to teleport from into another combo, rinse and repeat until the supposed to be annoying kahn is down for the count. :p Oh, and this should be obvious, but try to take quick advantage of kahn's taunting with setup combos, too far? teleport lol. Not a review, even though it looks a lot like one

Yeah, Kahn's pretty hard but in the end, it all comes to learning the enemy's pattern. It's good to remember how the AI may react when trying a certain action. ^^

He's pretty slow, personally I don't like playing as Kratos, he's got some pretty good range, though.

Can't exactly say yet, I haven't done much with kratos beyond trying him in training mode...
But I really loved all of the God of war gameplay references when playing as him, some launch auto-jumps here, a little QTE there, Uses many of his special aquired abilities/weapons, and like Joker said, excellent range when his knifes extend. Dunno if you guys already know this and I'm being a slowpoke as usual, but freddy krueger, the one originally planned as a xbox 360 exclusive(I think), is actually in my version of mk.(by very nice luck I got the mk komplete edition, all others dlc characters are in I believe)
