The dead characters can still come back in the next game as enemies for a challenge, if even non playable. Or maybe DLC. But Kung Lao could be great as an evil character for once. He could work for Shinnok and Quan Chi and same time want to pay the good guys back by proving them he's worth being in the spotlight. And some of the dead characters could be a good test for the good guys, mostly the ones from Outworld. Cause if I was Raiden actually, i wouldn't fully trust people like Bo or Lei Mei just like that. Let alone Jinko or Frost.

I think maybe every dead good character in mk9 will come back in the next game as a mind controlled enemy like the ones Raiden faced.
......damn, earthrealm/edenia will need some kind of miracle.(Even with the addition of new good guys of mk4 and later games)
