Resident Evil 5
Capcom’s legendary franchise takes you to Africa. Sometime after Resident Evil 4. But the Las Plagas are far from dead and forgotten. Those new zombies are invading the landscape yet once again but this time, Chris Redfield is about to run into an encounter with them.
Actually, once Chris arrives at the location, he meets with Sheva Alomar. A young BSAA agent based in Africa and she’s going with Chris trhough all of the challenges. As a partner. Thinking that Jill Valentine is dead, the word partner brings back odd memories in Chris mind but Sheva actually knows more about the land that they’re about to investigate than our superhero does. This goes without saying that before the game actually starts, you have to choose which character you want to play as between the 2. I didn’t do the multiplayer mode but it is surely helpful since of course your partner can die and controlled by the A.I… Well he plays like the A.I. There is no damn need to share big guns with an A.I partner since he/she’ll always be using the first revolver. And that as long as there are ammo’s left for it. So if you feel the need to use a Shotgun, Sniper rifle or magnum? Well keep it for yourself, you can sure make better use of it.
Once again, a little like Resident Evil 4’s campaign you’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by enemies. Wondering where are the quiet hallways and where are the jump scares gone for Christ sake. RE turned action not long after RE 1 in my opinion. We are since offered a lot of action, and along with really cool cut scenes that unfortunately rarely score in terms of scares. The monsters are growing bigger and weirder but that’s about it.
And in terms of gameplay, RE 5 is not different from the excellent RE 4 but this is sadly everything it has to compete with it. It’s still a really beautiful game for sure, but the story isn’t up to the previous one this time around and I even started to feel like I was doing laundry or washing the dishes while playing it. This is not too hard to just go forward when equipped properly. A good shotgun blast sometimes and you open up a big trail in front of you. RE has offered better challenges along the years, even with RE 4 and the script this time is one of the most boring and weakest script the series ever came up with. Big Evil Albert Wesker’s quotes have become insanely funny and cliché. That whole: “The human race requires judgment” or “The right to be a god” feel like they were taken in a b action movie where the big blond Russian wants to eliminate the American. This is just plain ridiculous. Wesker used to be my favorite bad guy in the franchise but this time really? I was just so bored with hearing him and fighting him at some point in the game that it was just laughtable. William Birkin from RE2 and RE3’s Nemesis weren’t matched this time for sure.
There are some pretty cool bosses, cut scenes and action scenes in this action/adventure RE. Kind of enough to let someone have fun while playing it. But one would be disappointed in RE 5 if he/she was going into it to jump or see gruesome monsters and deaths.
If you bought the gold edition like me, you will be offered a mini game called Lost in nightmares, that is much more about the survival horror terms of the franchise. A mission in which Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine were entangled before RE 5. They were lead into Spencer's mansion (Really similar to RE 1's mansion). In an attempt to know where to search for Wesker, Jill and Chris thought about interrogating Umbrella's founder Oswell E. Spencer. Other than that? Arm yourself with the best calibers available and just blast trough the foes surrounding you. This is all the game is about. If this one didn’t scare you, once you beat it though, you might just be convinced you shouldn’t get into it again.
7/10 for the beauty and the fun of blasting through hordes of foes.
