The events in Batman: Arkham Origins, by Warner Brothers Montréal take place way back in time. After defeating the Joker and Ra's Al Gul in Arkham City, Warner decided yet again to give us an adventure of the caped crusader. But, is this new adventure Worth the 2 previous installments? Unfortunately no. In fact, so much of this game is so similar to Arkham City that with the release of the PS4 coming up and Xbox One already on the shelfs, i'm wondering why they even thought about releasing it now. If not only for a couple more bucks in their safe.
So here goes. Yeah, the story takes place as Gotham City is taken hostage by a group of supervilains and above all, one of them has promised a reward of 50 million dollars to the first super assassin who will manage to kill the dark knight. This all happening Under the very eyes of Captain James Gordon and his police service troops. Gordon didn't trust Batman more than the criminals at the time. You'll even be faced with the Joker once more, the game depicting its own vision of the bat and clown's first encounter.
Once more, the combat and detective systems are back and nothing truly new is added to the mechanics. Except the fact that this time, i encountered so many bugs and glitches (Heard i wasn't the only one.) that the game might actually end up slowing down and lagging right in the middle of a fight or even freeze for no apparent reason, forcing the player to turn the console off or use its reset button. Some Enemies will even be invicible at times, but those can't fight back either so you just have to let them be, unless this happens during a boss. It actually happened to me that a boss got stuck to the floor after dying and when i came back in the room he was just gone, but the room was still marked as a mission saying i need to defeat this boss?? Seriously all that stuff is really cheap. Evermore when i payed it full price and the box never got open before. That's a nice way to go For Warner Montréal! Thinking that Ubisoft's big games such as the assassin's creed franchise are done here in the Province and seeing how bad the Warner offices here screwed this Batman game is such a shame.
I'm a big fan of Batman and there is still some fun to get out of this storymode, including the fights with the combat system, at least when it doesn't start to lag. For the story i'd say it's forgettable. They even felt so lazy this time around that they decided to introduce dialogues taken directly from Chris Nolan's Batman movies. As much as i love Bane and the Joker, those 2 are still 2 of the most relevant enemies during the game. Which, i always loved Bane as a once in a while apparition. As for the Joker. Yeah, Batman is nothing without the clown in the same universe, but he could at least be given a chance to breathe once away from Mister J! I'm starting to think that a game where there isn't the lovely subordinate Harley Quinn to help the psycho clown throw some sticks in our Wheel feels as blank as Batman not having the Joker. The Mad Hatter which i really like too was said to have an even bigger part this time around, resulting in a statement that turns into a big bold lie once you are rid of him.
There are a couple of great cinematics/Cut scenes. Let's add the addition of the fast travel feature, allowing you to travel aboard the plane to make it faster to another point of the town. A vast map but the big flaw is that still, half of it was taken directly from the Arkham City game map. Add to this the fact that some bosses or side missions are totally identical to some of the previous Arkham Games and it makes up for a pretty easy, cheap and boring game and Scenario. Even most of the bosses are not Worth mentioning, except for DeathStroke and Firefly. The 2 of them actually made 2 of the most interesting boss fights in the franchise yet.
For the rest? Half of it is all recycled stuff from other games. Most of the new gadgets aren't of any interest in the game's context. And it feels so much like walking back and forth in Arkham City once again that this time, the new stuff barely outweights the bad. Sad! They really did shoot themselves in the foot with a really rushed out money in the banks attempt.
