In 1987, Capcom released a game for the arcades, which would go on to revolutionize the world of video games for ever. In an era in which three button controls were considered challenging, Street fighter brought a new approach to arcade gaming, that was more complex, and way ahead of its time.

It used a six button configuration which gave the player a variety of combinations for punches and kicks. Furthermore, players could use a combination of commands to execute special moves. In 1991, Capcom released Street Fighter 2 World Warrior, which improved upon the original Street Fighter, by adding a selection of new characters, each with a unique fighting style. This brought the roster of playable characters to eight, making Street Fighter the only game with such a diverse gameplay. This revolutionary approach to gaming gave birth to a new genre of video games, and made Street Fighter into a title alive and kicking even today. If we take a look back, we see that it was innovation that won the day.

In 1994, SNK released a fighting game which gave Street Fighter a run for its money. The King of Fighters 94 (KOF94) was a crossover, featuring characters from some of SNK’s previous titles. The game was themed as a grand tournament, where a team of fighters from other games by SNK, took part in an epic battle to be declared the King of Fighters. The game proved to be a huge success, and the reason for this was the innovation KOF94 offered, by introducing a totally new approach to a fan-favorite genre. It literally was “The one game to rule them all, one game to find them; one game to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.”

Over the years, both games managed to amass a huge fan following, which lead to healthy competition between Capcom and SNK. This resulted in many titles from both companies, including the famous Capcom vs. SNK, a game which was a mega crossover between the Capcom and the SNK Universe.

Gamers are looking forward to the release of Street Fighter 5, with KoF14 not far behind. Both games are expected to be released very soon, so let us take a closer look at the iconic titles, and compare them to see what fans should expect.

Graphics
With Street Fighter, Capcom made a wise move to create a new stylized look. Although the appearance is not that different from Street Fighter 4, it is more refined and the overall ambience of the game looks like a painting, giving it a unique visual style.

In terms of graphics, the King of Fighters 14 does not fare all too well. With the power of next generation consoles, good graphics are a staple expectation. Games like The Order 1886, Batman: Arkham Knight, or even Far Cry 4, have already set a very high bar in terms of graphics, and delivering anything below that is bound to be criticized. Though not poor, KoF14 graphics just seem a bit bland.

Characters
Street Fighter has a roster of 16 confirmed characters, with 12 of them hailing from previous titles, and four new additions.
The King of Fighters 14 is gearing up with a roster of 50 characters available at launch. So KoF14 clearly wins this round
.

Gameplay
Next, we talk about the most important factor, that is, gameplay. We have not been able to see the gameplay of either title in full, but from what we do gather, both games seem to deliver a great experience.
By making minor tweaks and adding new features to further build upon the gameplay of Street Fighter 4, Capcom has refined Street Fighter 5, and it looks great. Additionally, the new camerawork complements the animation perfectly, making the action come to life.

KoF14 also has managed to come up with an impressive sequence, similar to that of KoF13, filled with combos, juggles and canceling moves. The animation seems smooth at this point, but it is too early to make any definite comparisons just yet.

Verdict
Both games seem to have their pros and cons. The King of Fighters 14 has a bigger roster, and offers a fast paced gameplay, but its graphics did not win the day. Street Fighter 5 on the other hand, looks beautiful, has very impressive character design, and extraordinary camera work, but its small roster disappoints.

All in all, Street Fighter 5 higher, at least at this point, because the game looks and feels better, and its only shortcoming is the lack of characters, which we hope will be fixed with downloadable content. KoF14 on the other hand, carries average graphics and mediocre animation. This is a certain concern, because regardless of whether you have five characters or 50, if all of them look and feel less than impressive to play with, the game will deliver a tedious experience at best.
