Blocking In traditional
Street Fighting style, blocking in Injustice is performed by holding back. Lots of other fighting games also use this mechanic and apparently the folks over at NeatherRealm have joined in too. So look forward to not having to press an entirely separate button to block.
Super Moves
Another distinct mechanic in Injustice are the mid-game “super” moves. For a long time,
Mortal Kombat has saved the flashy stuff for after the match (‘Finish Him’, anyone?). We already saw super moves like this with the recent
Mortal Kombat and the X-Ray specials and now it seems that NeatherRealm has completely embraced the idea. How cool will it be to see The Flash run around the world to uppercut his opponent to obliteration? Here’s a hint:
very cool. It is much more epic as a mid-match haymaker than a post-beatdown showboating move.
Context Sensitive Battlegrounds
Much like Super
Smash Brothers, context sensitive stages are here in full-force. Picking and choosing a stage isn’t just a choice on aesthetics, but an important factor for each match. Standing near a car or near electrical wiring is a deadly tactic and taking advantage could be the key to winning. There is a lot of fun in experimenting with each stage and seeing how the characters interact with the backgrounds. And much like
Smash Brothers, concerns about balancing by hardcore fighting game fans will come. Watch.
Mid-match Game Changers
Lastly, characters have mid-game traits that are sort of a mix of what we’ve seen before in other games. To give an idea of what these traits do, by the pressing of a single-button, Nightwing’s batons can become a long staff. Meaning he can go from a fast-paced character to a character wielding a long-reaching weapon. This change can be done mid-combo and dynamically changes Nightwing’s play style. This is similar to what was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and the fighting style/weapon changes. Using the same button, some characters have temporary speed and strength boosts, which are, again, like super moves seen in other fighting games.
Injustice: Gods Among Us releases April of 2013.
