Personally I love each and every character, including the hidden characters Smoke, Jade, and Noob Saibot and the bosses Kintaro and Shao Kahn, but in terms of gameplay, Liu Kang's the character I use the most.

This game is epic. It's really hard to pick one character I think... But I'll still try...

Of the rookies(rookies consist of characters who are playable for the first time) in the game, Baraka, Reptile, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Jax, and Shang Tsung.

Easily Jax is the worst of the lot.
After him though it's REALLY tough.
Baraka is almost a poster child of the series.
Reptile went on to be a cult favourite so to say, and is now the host body for Onaga.
Kung Lao actually won this tournament. So he's got to be good for something lol.
Kitana has a hell of a storyline and is a major player.
Mileena is the *** symbol for the game... Which makes me wonder why Kitana isn't since they're twins everywhere but the mouth...
Shang Tsung went on to finally beat the good guys in Deadly Alliance.

When you look at all of that, It's got to come down to Shang Tsung, Kung Lao, and Baraka. So out of these three who's the most important to the story? Shang Tsung. He finally killed the guy no one else could. Liu Kang.

are you kidding liu kang was kicking shang's @$$ at the intro if he knew that quan chi was around he would have dodged that flying skull and also kicked quan's @$$(quan chi is just a cowerd to attack liu from behind)
in the end shang's disadvantage is that liu wants vengence by killing shang.
